John Campbell came to the London Bar in 2009 after practising as a Silk in South Africa, where he also acted as a Judge on occasion.
He is experienced both as a trial lawyer and in applications. He has particular experience in all aspects of public law (including administrative law and constitutional law), media and entertainment (generally, but with an emphasis on defamation, privacy, protection of journalists’ sources and entertainment contracts), competition law (M&A’s and anti-competitive schemes), confidentiality, tax (including VAT), employment law, copyright, restraint of trade, procurement (including tenders) and a wide variety of regulatory work. He has appeared in some of the leading cases in these fields in South Africa, and at all levels of the system from regulatory tribunals to the Constitutional Court. His clients, over the years, have included the SA Revenue Service, all the major SA newspaper companies and large corporations.
Recently in the UK, he has focused on libel, consumer credit and general commercial matters.
He has also written on aspects of public law in leading journals and is co-author of the leading SA text on competition law.
