With less than six months until voters in England and Wales go to the polls for the first time since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic, LLG Elections 2021 is an essential and timely event for anyone involved in organising, running and monitoring the delivery of elections. The conference, chaired by Quentin Baker, LLG President and Chief Legal Officer at Hertfordshire County Council, will address the key current electoral law issues for local authority lawyers and officers, providing attendees with the essential tools to enable them to deliver successful, efficient and legally compliant elections in May 2021.
Sessions will include a session by Tim Straker QC and Rupert Beloff of 4-5 Gray’s Inn Square focused on ‘How to avoid Electoral Petitions’, as well as guidance and advice from the Electoral Commission and an insight into their objectives for the delivery of successful elections in May. Attendees will hear from Emyr Thomas, Partner at Sharpe Pritchard, discussing legal challenges including attempts to challenge the conduct of an election by judicial review and the action required if served with an election petition. Mark Heath, Returning Officer at Southampton and Consultant with VWV, will provide a thorough examination of the role of the Returning Officer, and Hugh Peart, Director of Legal and Governance Services at Harrow, will provide a practical insight into the planning, management and smooth running of successful elections. Each session will provide attendees with the opportunity to ask questions, share experience and discuss the key issues of the day.
The event will be held online, and attendees will receive login details for all sessions once they have registered. Whilst this event will be held across one day, all sessions will be recorded and made available to download after the event, providing the opportunity either to engage for the whole day or to attend selected sessions on the day and then catch up in your own time.
