Toby Vanhegan - Discrimination Law Association - Using the Equality Act in Housing Law - 27 June 2019
Toby Vanhegan, barrister at 4-5 Gray's Inn Square Chambers, will present a seminar about the current developments of using the Equality Act 2010 in housing litigation. He is pioneering in this area of housing law by acting in the leading cases, such as R(Goloshvili) v. Secretary of State for the Home Department and Liberty [2019] EWHC 614 (Admin), where the High Court held that the Notice of Letting to a Disqualified Person under the Right to Rent scheme was an act of direct race discrimination, but did not find the Defendant liable because the actions were authorised within the Immigration Act 2014.
Further, he has acted in the the two leading cases on breaches of the public sector equality duty in the context of possession proceedings: Forward v. Aldwyck Housing Group Limited [2019] EWHC 24 (QB) and Powell v. Dacorum Borough Council [2019] EWCA Civ 23.
