Vivienne and Katharine presented to local authority delegates about the pre-election period, the effect of s.2 Local Government Act 1986 on local authority publicity and the particular challenges posed by social media.
The increasing importance of platforms such as Twitter and Facebook for communicating with the public and for political campaigning continues to pose legal and practical difficulties for local authority officers. Vivienne and Katharine dealt with both the legal and policy framework to which decision-makers need to have regard and the pragmatic approaches that should be adopted to deal with common issues, for example how to address prohibited third-party content posted on local authority social media platforms.
