Overview

Public and administrative law is a core specialism of 4-5 Gray's Inn Square, and Chambers has long been recognised for its strength and depth in this field. Our public law barristers specialise in bringing challenges that defend the rights of individuals which have a wider impact on society and affected groups. Both Chambers and a number of individual practitioners are recognised in the directories for their expertise. Members have specific expertise in challenging cuts to public services, public inquiries, and discrimination claims.

Our members have experience of acting for public bodies and for claimants across the full spectrum of public law matters, including in judicial review proceedings, statutory appeals, inquiries, and advisory work. Our expertise spans planning and environmental law, information law, education, welfare and community care, health, compulsory purchase, public procurement, rating, licensing and elections. We have particular strength and experience in issues relating to local government powers, structure and finance.

Our members have a long track record of involvement in some of the leading cases in the High Court, Court of Appeal, Supreme Court, and Privy Council. We also have experience at all levels of experience acting in a number of different high-profile ongoing public inquiries. We are represented on the Attorney's General panels for civil litigation, and regularly accept off-panel instructions. 4-5 Gray's Inn Square is committed to accepting publicly funded cases and we maintain a strong record of acting on a pro bono basis in public interest matters.
