Practice Summary
Richard qualified as a solicitor in 1990 and practised in the City of London as a partner with a leading international law firm for over 25 years. His practice was primarily in the field of international arbitration and professional indemnity and Richard advised clients in multiple jurisdictions.
After serving as the Head of Professional Indemnity for the firm, and completing 2 terms on the global board of the business, Richard took a sabbatical from his practice as a solicitor to be called to the bar in 2012. Richard subsequently ceased practising as a solicitor in 2017 and transferred to the independent bar and held an academic appointment at King’s College, University of London teaching public law.
After completing further post-graduate study and undertaking doctoral research at King’s College in Informational Privacy, Data Protection and Human Rights, Richard further developed a specialist practice at the bar in informational privacy law.
Richard’s practice focuses on all aspects of information rights in particular, data protection (UK GDPR), freedom of information, environmental information regulations, misuse of private information, breach of confidence, human rights as well as judicial review (including immigration law) and professional disciplinary and regulatory proceedings.
Richard is on the approved panel of counsel for the Independent Office for Police Conduct and has also acted for a range of public authorities including:
Government Legal Department;
Local authorities;
Public universities;
NHS foundation trusts;
Richard has also advised, Insurance and Reinsurance companies both in the UK and in foreign jurisdictions in relation to informational privacy matters and overseas transfers of data.
