Tim Straker KC, Annette Cafferkey and Adam Richardson were ready to appear before a Divisional Court on Thursday 19 February 2026 on behalf of the Reform Party, instructed by solicitor James Dyche of Aston Bond Law Firm. However, prior to the hearing, the Government conceded the claim, accepting the legal position advanced by Reform’s legal team. That position was that the Government lacked the necessary power or was acting unlawfully in seeking to postpone local elections scheduled for May.
As a result of that concession, the May 2026 elections will now proceed as planned.
The outcome represents an important result in public and electoral law, confirming fundamental constitutional limits on executive power and safeguarding the integrity of the democratic process. The Divisional Court proceedings—resolved through the Government’s concession—stand as authoritative recognition of the correctness of the legal position advanced on behalf of our client.
This result underscores Chambers’ commanding position in electoral and local government law. Counsel worked closely with instructing solicitor, James Dyche of Aston Bond Law Firm to develop a robust and carefully considered legal argument.
4-5 Gray's Inn Square remains committed to delivering the highest standard of legal representation for our clients in cases of constitutional and public importance.
