Philip Williams joins 4-5 Gray's Inn Square
Called to the Bar in 2005, Philip is a leading junior with a busy practice, primarily in the High Court and Court of Appeal. He is regularly instructed in high-value and contentious disputes, including civil fraud, commercial and Chancery litigation, defamation, professional negligence and sports law, often on urgent injunctive applications. He frequently appears against King's Counsel, and has acted as a leading junior in both the High Court and the Court of Appeal.
Philip also has a wide-ranging planning and environment practice, advising and representing developers, residents' groups and local planning authorities. His work includes judicial reviews and statutory challenges under sections 288 and 289 of the Town and Country Planning Act 1990, planning enforcement, and compulsory purchase and compensation. In addition, he acts in property and construction disputes, regulatory proceedings, inquests and public inquiries.
Before coming to the Bar, Philip was a professional sportsman, trainer and promoter, which informs his work in sports law.
Rupert Beloff, Joint Head of Chambers, said: “I am very pleased to welcome Phil to Chambers. He is a highly experienced and respected barrister, and I know he will be a real asset to 4-5. His base in Wales also gives us an excellent opportunity to strengthen our presence there and to build further on the work we already undertake across the entire jurisdiction.”
Emily Martin, Senior Clerk, said: "Philip's arrival adds real strength to our civil, property and public law offering. His ability to handle complex, cross-over disputes, from fraud and defamation to planning challenges, means we can offer clients more choice at leading junior level. We are very pleased to have Phil aboard.”
Philip said: “I am really excited to have been invited to 4-5 Gray’s Inn Square. It is a real pleasure to be able to work the fantastic clerking team and such high-quality colleagues and bring a focus to Wales at the same time”
