Simon Randle and Timothy Straker KC of 4-5 Gray's Inn Square were instructed to represent the London Borough of Newham in a planning appeal brought by London City Airport against Newham’s decision to refuse the airport's application for planning permission, by which it sought to expand its annual number of passengers from 6.5 million to 9 million and to extend the airport’s limited Saturday operating hours. The planning inquiry lasted for three weeks and entailed extensive expert evidence in relation to the environmental and economic consequences of the airport’s proposals. Ultimately, the Planning Inspectors determined to recommend that planning permission be granted for the airport’s expansion plans whilst maintaining the curfew in place limiting Saturday operating hours. The Secretary of State for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities agreed with the Inspectors’ recommendations.
